The Edmonton Oilers announced on Sunday that they have placed veteran goaltender Calvin Pickard on waivers.

In 16 appearances this season, Pickard is 5-6-2 with an .871 save percentage and 3.68 goals-against average.

He has not played since Jan. 8, when he made 13 saves in a 4-3 win over the Winnipeg Jets.

Pickard played an important role in last year’s playoffs for Edmonton. He took over as the starter in Game 3 of the first round against the Los Angeles Kings with Stuart Skinner struggling and backstopped them the rest of the series and through the first two games of the second round against Vegas.

He got injured in Game 3 against the Golden Knights and was replaced by Skinner, who led them through the series and the Western Conference Finals against the Dallas Stars.

Pickard would return for the Stanley Cup Final, replacing Skinner in Games 3 and Game 4. The Oilers would go on to lose in six games to the Florida Panthers for the second year in a row.

He is in the second season of a two-year, $2 million contract.

A second-round pick (49th overall) by Colorado in 2010, Pickard has appeared in 191 career NHL games, split between the Avalanche, Toronto Maple Leafs, Philadelphia Flyers, Arizona Coyotes, Detroit Red Wings and Oilers.
