Private label products are reaching record-high levels in Greek households, as persistently high prices continue to shape consumer choices in supermarkets.
Despite the growing shift toward more affordable options, Greek consumers are not turning away from domestically produced goods. The “Made in Greece” consumer movement remains strong, reinforcing trust in local quality while supporting private label growth.
In comments to the Athens Macedonian News Agency, Professor George Baltas said a survey conducted by the Athens University of Economics in January, based on a random sample of households, shows that for the third consecutive year private label products have set a new record in consumer preference. Nearly four out of ten products purchased were private label items, he said.
According to Baltas, the strength of the “Made in Greece” movement further boosts private label market share, as most private label products are produced domestically by Greek manufacturers on behalf of supermarket chains. Growth in the sector is also being driven by the expansion and quality upgrades of private label ranges by retailers.
A consistent preference for domestically produced goods can support economic growth, improve the trade balance and contribute to reducing unemployment, Baltas reminded. [AMNA]
