The Saskatchewan Roughriders have released longtime kicker Brett Lauther.

The 35-year-old connected on 39-of-54 field goal attempts in 2025 for an average of 72.2 percent, the worst mark of his eight-year tenure in Saskatchewan. His average field goal attempt came from a distance of 36.5 yards, one yard longer than the league average.

Lauther also made a league-worst 91.2 percent of his converts and missed a 39-yard field goal attempt in the fourth quarter of the Grey Cup against Montreal.

The native of Truro, N.S. has played 118 regular-season games over eight CFL seasons, almost all of which have come with the Roughriders. He has converted 81.4 percent of his field goal attempts, 93.3 percent of his convert attempts, and punted five times for a net average of 22.4 yards.

Lauther was originally a seventh-round pick in the 2013 CFL Draft by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats out of Saint Mary’s University.

Last month, 3DownNation reported that Lauther was due a $25,000 roster bonus on February 1. According to 3DownNation reporter John Hodge, his release came prior to the bonus being due, though the transaction wasn’t announced until Monday.

“Brett didn’t have the year that we had hoped and he had hoped, but what we needed to do is try to weigh in kind of the entire career of how he’s played, and then where do we think it goes from here,” said general manager Jeremy O’Day last month.

“Those discussions probably haven’t happened yet, but we’ll continue to look at our roster as we do all the time and try to make sure that we have the best team possible.”

The Saskatchewan Roughriders finished first in the West Division standings in 2025 with a 12-6 record, finishing first in the West Division for the first time since 2019. The team went on to defeat the Montreal Alouettes in the 112th Grey Cup in Winnipeg, marking the team’s first championship in 12 years. Trevor Harris went 11-5 as a starter, throwing for 4,549 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions.

The Roughriders ranked second in net offence, second in net defence, and tied for third with a turnover differential of plus-eight. The club’s leading rusher was A.J. Ouellette with 1,222 yards, leading receiver was KeeSean Johnson with 1,159 yards, and leading tackler was A.J. Allen with 91 tackles. Saskatchewan finished second in attendance with average crowds of 28,427, which was a 2.7 percent increase from the previous year.
