The city is officially opening two new NHL-sized ice rinks ahead of the Family Day holiday in Brampton.
Saturday will see the ribbon-cutting of the city’s newest winter recreation destination in Sandalwood Park, opening the rinks to the public over Family Day weekend with appearances by former NHL Stanley Cup champion Gary Roberts and Toronto Sceptres forward Maggie Connors.
“The new rinks will provide wide-ranging benefits to the community, offering a safe, inclusive and accessible space for both athletes and families. Residents will have more opportunities to stay active during the winter months, while young players can develop their skills in a professional-quality setting,” the city says.
The upgraded rinks have high-density polyethylene boards with acrylic glass, designed for durability, weather resistance and low maintenance, the city says.
The rinks will have NHL-standard goals measuring six feet by four feet, and protective netting behind goals to keep spectators safe. There’s also a weatherproof digital scoreboard for official games, and LED floodlights and string lights for night games and ambience for casual skates.
And with a new chiller system and ice resurfacing machine, the city says the rinks will have consistent ice quality throughout the season.
The grand opening of the two new rinks is on Feb. 14, from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.
The new rinks will also be used by Brampton’s free drop-in Youth Sport Development Program, which launched last winter with former Canadian professional hockey player and Brampton native Phil Oreskovic.
There are three Youth Hockey Development sessions planned at the rinks over the Family Day weekend, including two on Monday.
During the summer months, the rinks will be repurposed for ball hockey and other sports, like pickleball, the city says. The new rinks will also act “as a community hub, encouraging social connection, hosting events and tournaments and contributing to Brampton’s growing reputation as a city that invests in recreation and quality of life.”
You can visit the new NHL-sized rinks in Sandalwood Park, located at 130 Conestoga Dr. For more information on the new rinks, visit www.Brampton.ca.
