A 36-year-old native of Kanagawa, Japan, Sugano made his big league debut in 2025, signing a one-year pact with the Baltimore Orioles. He made 30 starts for the team, going 10-10 with a 4.64 earned run average and WHIP of 1.331 over 157.0 innings pitched. He struck out 106 batters and walked 36.

Prior to joining the Orioles, Sugano had spent the entirety of his 12-year NPB career with the Yomiuri Giants, where he was an eight-time All-Star, two-time Sawamura Award winner and three-time Central League Most Valuable Player.
