“Brockville? Easy: fudge,” Naomi Snieckus, creator of the comedy anthology series I’m Also Here, said in an interview Thursday.

O’Mally Kourt Fudgery is the setting for the Brockville instalment of the six-episode series, which premiered on Bell Fibe TV1 on Thursday.
Produced by Firecracker Department and C’mon Mort Productions, the comedy series was filmed last summer in six eastern Ontario communities — Brockville, Cornwall, Arnprior, Lindsay, Bobcaygeon, and Cobourg. Each episode drops into a pocket of everyday life and plays out a warm and witty comedic scenario in a short production.
Without wanting to give too much away, Snieckus notes: “Brockville is about a hold-up in a fudge store.”
Created by an entirely female and nonbinary team, the project saw the involvement of six directors, four writers, and 12 actors who leaned into the idea of bringing artists together with a shared vision to create something fun. The production also included a mentorship component that aimed to support emerging artists alongside established creators.

City still in grip of Movie Madness
Snieckus, who is also the show’s producer, an actor in it, and the founder of Firecracker Department, said the team met great people in each town or city it visited. Each episode is intended to shine a light on the community it was filmed in by recognizing that sometimes the city or town may be overlooked, but each has so much to offer.
The first line in every episode is the slogan associated with the town or city, with Brockville’s being “The City of the 1000 Islands.”
The mentee writers were given the task of researching the different communities, and the beloved downtown fudge shop was one of a few options submitted for Brockville, said Snieckus.

Along with Snieckus, the Brockville episode, which runs for nine minutes, stars actresses Quancetia Hamilton and Linda Kash. It is written by Wendy Litner and directed by Allana Harkin.

“The towns definitely became characters unto themselves,” said Snieckus.
While comedy is the show’s calling, it’s not about making fun of these different places, added Hamilton.
“We had to respect where we went,” she said. “The people were just wonderful.”
Both women appreciated how accommodating the Fudgery was to the production, as well as the interest the shoot received from the people passing by.
“Just the whole vibe of that store, it’s such a collaboration,” said Snieckus.
The short, low-budget episode was also a blast to film.

“All the characters have just so much fun,” said Hamilton.
“When you read something and you laugh out loud, you know you’ve got something.”
The shoot was also brief, with everyone coming in the night before, beginning at 6 a.m. and taking the day to get it done.
“It didn’t feel rushed,” said Hamilton.
“It felt like we had time to bring those characters to life.”
Brockville, of course, is no stranger to the screen. Nearly two years ago, the city was seized by movie madness when the much-bigger-budget production of the romantic comedy Hot Frosty transformed Court House Avenue into a generic American town.
I’m Also Here is more low-key, but also not aimed at transforming this city into something else.
“We wanted Brockville to be Brockville,” said Snieckus.
“We definitely learned about what Brockville had to offer.”
Bell Fibe TV1 is an on-demand channel available to people who subscribe to the company’s digital television service.
