As temperatures begin to warm up in the coming weeks and plants prepare to bloom, activity from insects and rodents is expected to increase across Ontario, as they emerge from winter hiding spots to search for food and shelter.

Taking preventive steps early can help reduce the risk of infestations before the warmer months arrive.

According to Orkin Canada, the country’s largest pest control provider, here are some of the most common seasonal intruders to watch for this spring, both indoors and outdoors.

Ants

Warmer weather often drives ants indoors as they search for food and water.

Risks: Ants can contaminate food, invade kitchens and become difficult to control once colonies establish themselves indoors.

What you should do: Keep kitchen areas clean, seal food properly, wipe spills quickly and seal gaps around doors, windows and pipes to prevent entry.

Termites

Spring marks the beginning of termite swarm season, when colonies release winged termites to form new nests.

Risks: Termites can cause serious structural damage by feeding on wood and may go unnoticed until significant damage occurs.

What you should do: Watch for discarded wings, mud tubes or hollow wood, address moisture problems and contact a pest professional if activity is suspected.

Rodents (mice and rats)

Rodents that sheltered in warm areas during winter may begin nesting under decks, in walls and around structures in spring.

Risks: Rodents can spread disease, contaminate food and cause property damage by chewing wires, insulation and wood.

What you should do: Seal entry points, remove food sources, store garbage securely and keep storage areas clean and organized.

Mosquitoes

Standing water from spring rains creates ideal breeding conditions for mosquitoes.

Risks: Mosquito bites can cause irritation and some species may spread diseases such as West Nile virus.

What you should do: Remove standing water from gutters, birdbaths and containers, maintain clean water features and trim vegetation where mosquitoes rest.

Stinging insects (bees, wasps and hornets)

Stinging insects begin building nests in trees, eaves, sheds and attics during spring.

Risks: These insects can become aggressive if disturbed and may pose health risks, especially for those with allergies.

What you should do: Inspect outdoor areas for early nest activity, seal openings around the home and avoid disturbing nests. Contact a professional for safe removal if needed.
