As we take on February, a month often associated with love, Southlake Health is sharing a reminder that love can show up in the most unexpected places, even inside a chaotic emergency room.

Newmarket, Ont., couple Arnold and Helen McNeill just celebrated 74 years of marriage. In recent months, health challenges meant they had to live apart so each could receive the care they needed at separate facilities.

But, all Arnold wanted for the holidays was to see his wife.

The McNeill family had arranged a New Year’s Eve visit so the two could welcome 2026 together. But those plans changed when Helen suffered a spinal fracture and was rushed to Southlake’s Emergency Department.

Around the same time, doctors said Arnold’s condition declined.

“Developing an infection and becoming increasingly confused, he (Arnold) was transported by ambulance to the same hospital,” according to a Southlake Health spokesperson.

While the couple received treatment in separate areas, two nurses learned about Arnold’s wish and the tough months the pair had spent apart.

Southlake Health said staff stepped in to help make arrangements and bring the couple together inside of the Newmarket emergency room.

“Side by side on twin hospital beds, the couple reached for one another, held hands, and enjoyed the last day of 2025 together, just as they had for more than seven decades,” shared a Southlake Health spokesperson.

They spent their final hours of 2025 together, ringing new year the only way they wanted to.

The McNeill family expressed it’s a moment they will never forget. “This had been Arnold’s Christmas wish,” the family said. “These nurses should be recognized for their exceptional care and compassion to ensure the comfort of their patients.”

In a media release, the hospital added that healthcare is ultimately about people caring for people, and that Southlake is proud to provide leading-edge care close to home.

Southlake is a full-service hospital offering advanced cardiac, cancer and thoracic care.
