Police say they issued over 700 tickets to people on their way to and from the Shambhala Music Festival on the last weekend in July.

This enforcement effort in the West Kootenay mountains spanned four days, with speeding being the most frequently cited violation.

The authorities also reported that police issued more than 80 tickets for driving under the influence of drugs.

As festival-goers departed, the BC Highway Patrol collaborated with the Nelson Police to monitor for impaired driving and unsafe vehicle.

“The temperatures were high and a little uncomfortable for officers working long days in full uniform,” said Cpl. Michael McLaughlin.

“But it is clear this enforcement was necessary. Police officers were particularly concerned about getting impaired drivers and unsafe vehicles off the road.”

This resulted in 60 vehicles being towed for mechanical safety or driver impairment.

The annual festival, held in Salmo, typically draws around 20,000 electronic dance music enthusiasts each year.

This year’s festival was held from July 25 to 28.
