WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The North Carolina men’s soccer team opened Caroliina Cup play with a 2-1 win over Wake Forest on Saturday. The Heels got on the board through newcomer Joschi Shelb. Bertil Rygaard Hansen scored the eventual game winner to give the Heels a 2-0 lead before Wake Forest pulled one back.
Shelb’s goal came on a nice header off an assist from Abubaker Mayanja, then Shelb provided the helper on Rygaard Hansen’s finish. Alan Rutkowski started a new era in goal, taking over for long time starter Andrew Cordes. Rutkowski was comfortable claiming crosses and delivered a few nice saves to keep the Heels on top. Newcomers Myles Carson, Jonathan Luna Sabando and Etienne Veillard saw their first college action in today’s match.
Carolina will be back in action next Sunday, March first when it welcomes Duke for a match at Finley Fields at 6 p.m.
