A buzzy new Toronto pizzeria and an equally popular, only slightly less new sandwich shop are joining forces to create the ultimate Italian treat this March, but you’ll have to keep your eye on the ball if you want to try it for yourself.

It’s hard to say whether the good people of Toronto love Italian sandwiches or pizza more. Something about quick and easy Italian classics just captures the collective imagination and has hordes in the city begging, insatiably, for more.

Lucky for us, a dynamic duo consisting of Kensington Market’s Uncle Pete’s and Harbord Village’s Nice Slice are teaming up next month to create the ultimate mashup of internet-breaking Toronto delicacies.

“Nice Slice is being deemed the new Badiali and it’s quite obvious that the team over there deserves that designation. Simply put, I was just floored when I stopped by, the pizza is so good, the menu is so simple yet unique and the environment is just so friendly and welcoming that it made sense in my head to reach out,” Uncle Pete’s co-founder, the titular Pete, tells blogTO.

Pete tells blogTO that collaborating with other restaurants is one of his favourite parts of the job, so immediately after visiting Nice Slice, he knew it would be a dream collaboration.

“I think we make a good pair because the two of us are both young businesses in Toronto that have landed with a splash because of our deep focus on quality ingredients, supporting the local economy and creating a warm environment for people to get a quiet moment of respite in what’s been an absolutely crazy past 6 months,” Pete says.

The result is more or less a license to print money.

Aptly named “The Uncle Slice,” the product of the collaboration is a pizza that blends the best of both restaurants: Nice Slice’s droolworthy dough and founder Nick White’s pesto finished with balsamic glaze, Italian bomba and Uncle Pete’s lemon ricotta.

Pete tells blogTO that he and Nick spent a day together experimenting with various flavour combinations before settling on the final product, finally achieving the approval of Nice Slice chef Niko, who, Pete says, “has an incredible palate.”

“We’re very lucky to live in such an amazing city like Toronto where there are so many different cultures, people and foods,” Pete says. “Collaborations like this make it so that business owners like us get to connect, be a little creative and try to come up with something cool for the city to enjoy.”

But there’s a catch: the collaboration will only be around for one weekend this coming March.

The Uncle Slice will be available exclusively at Nice Slice (196 Borden St.) on the weekend of March 14th and 15th, and, though the exact quantity of pies is up in the air for now, Pete tells blogTO that they’ll be more limited than the rest of Nice Slice’s menu.

For a pizzeria that regularly sells out on even the most normal of days, I’d say that, if you have any hope of sinking your teeth into an Uncle Slice, you’re going to want to get there early.

Hey, if there’s anything that Toronto loves more than pizza and Italian sandwiches, it’s waiting in lines, right?
