Winnipeg police say a 33-year-old man is facing charges for allegedly assaulting someone with a weapon.

WPS says just after 12:30 a.m. on Feb. 23, officers responded to a shelter along Stanley Street after receiving a report of an assault.

When they arrived at the scene, they found a 36-year-old man outside the shelter suffering from a serious upper-body injury.

The officers provided emergency medical care, and the man was taken to hospital by WFPS in stable condition.

Through an investigation, police learned that around 12:30 a.m., two men had reportedly become involved in a verbal dispute, which reportedly escalated to a point where one of the men pulled a machete from his backpack and hit the other, before fleeing.

Police were able to find a man believed to be connected a short time later outside a building along Princess Street, and he was taken into custody.

WPS says a 33-year-old man is facing charges of aggravated assault, possession of a weapon, carrying a concealed weapon prohibted device, or ammunition.
