Toronto Police said Jahmal Sylvester, of no fixed address, is unlawfully at large after he was allowed to leave the facility in the Finch Ave. W.-Hwy. 400 area of North York on Feb. 2 “despite being subject to a general warrant of committal requiring him to stay in custody to serve a jail sentence.”

“The accused left the courthouse and failed to return to custody to serve his sentence as required,” police said in a news release.

Media relations officer Const. Laura Brabant confirmed in an email to the Toronto Sun that Sylvester was released in error.

“Although he was released at bail court on his current charges, he was to remain in custody to serve out a sentence from a previous case from another jurisdiction,” Brabant said.

Police did not detail what Sylvester was being charged with at the time of his bail hearing. It was also unclear what he was serving time for when he was erroneously released from the bail centre.

An email asking whether the Ministry of the Attorney General was aware of Sylvester’s release and if they were investigating the circumstances around his release was not immediately returned. It was also unclear if any steps had been taken to avoid a similar incident.

Police said that Sylvester is 6-foot and 200 pounds. Cops said he is also known to frequently visit the Rexdale area.
