The first season finale of Star Trek: Trek Academy isn’t arriving for a few weeks, but the second season finale has just wrapped up production. The wrap party is set for tonight, while the show’s future after season 2 still an open question.
“Bittersweet” goodbyes
Production on the 10-episode second season of Starfleet Academy began last August, about six months after wrapping up work on the first season. In the last couple of days, we have been seeing members of the Starfleet Academy cast turn to social media to share moments and say goodbye as they individually wrapped their work on the second season. On Sunday, Kerrice Brooks (SAM) posted on Instagram that she wrapped at 4 AM, showing a picture of her hugging co-star Bella Shepard (Genesis Lythe) with Zoë Steiner (Tarima Sadal) clapping for the moment.

As for Shepard, she wrapped up on Monday and posted a short video on her Instagram story, showing she got a bit emotional when she wrapped. Her Instagram message was “Dats a Season 2 wrap on yours truly.”

TrekMovie spoke to Bella last week as they were filming the season 2 finale, and she talked about how things had changed for the cast compared to when they filmed the season 1 finale last year.
“Oh my gosh, so many things have changed, almost as a reflection to what our cadets went through in season 1. And then seeing what they go through in season 2. Our cadets are more tight knit in season 2 because their relationships are deeper, and I think we’re all experiencing that now in real life as well, because we’ve known each other for longer now. And so it’s hard to come to an end and not know exactly what’s happening next. But also, we’re all just really proud of ourselves. I keep reminding everyone that we just did two seasons, basically back-to-back, and that’s a lot of work. And we all did it together, and what a beautiful journey it was. But people are — it’s always sad to say goodbye, or not goodbye, but ‘See you later.’ And I think it’s really, it’s just bittersweet.”
Other cast members have also posted about wrapping up in the last couple of days, including Gina Yashere (Lura Thok), who got in under the wire before departing for Star Trek: The Cruise, which is currently out at sea. Robert Picardo (The Doctor) is also on the cruise, so he, too, finished his work before the ship departed, as did fellow cruiser Zoë Steiner (Tarima).
Karim Diané (Jay-Den Kraag) announced he wrapped up work yesterday, and today he made a longer post revealing the wrap party for season 2 is tonight. He posed for a video which appears to show him wearing a new jacket, likely a wrap present for the cast and crew. He shot the video in front of the Star Trek Stage at Pinewood Studios in Toronto, Canada, which was also home to all five seasons of Star Trek: Discovery.
What’s next for SFA?
Diané’s post noted that as someone who has worked in the industry, he is well aware of how “rare” it is for series to get second seasons. And he had this to say about the show’s future:
“There’s been a lot of chatter online about the future of this show, about what comes next, what might happen, what people predict. And I understand the curiosity. But I think sometimes we forget to honor the present while we’re speculating about tomorrow.
Right now, we have TWENTY episodes of a series about the Academy coming to screens. Twenty stories. Twenty hours of this world. Something that will live on and be discovered long after premiere week metrics fade away.”
Certainly the future beyond a second season for the series is unclear. The actor’s comment about “premiere week metrics” is likely referring to the coverage of how the show has been performing, with some mixed results from early data. There is also the complication of how the second season greenlight was given before management regimes changed at Paramount, with the Skydance team coming in with new plans for streaming and for Star Trek as a whole.
Starfleet Academy executive producer and co-showrunner Alex Kurtzman has talked about how he has envisioned a four season arc for the show, to mirror a four year stint for the cadets at the titular school. However, there also the complication Kurtzman’s overall contract with CBS Studios and Paramount expires this year. Alex directed the season 2 finale and has said he planned to meet with Paramount execs after finishing up, saying he was “hopeful” about his future overseeing the Trek TV franchise.
Some of those same executives were at the Starfleet Academy premiere in NYC just last month.

There’s no word yet on when we can expect season 2 of Starfleet Academy. Paramount has also not yet set release targets for season 4 or season 5 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. That series wrapped production in December.
