A Toronto hospital has once again been crowned as one of the top health care facilities on the planet.

University Health Network’s Toronto General Hospital was just named the second-best hospital in the world, marking the highest position ever achieved by a Canadian hospital. Toronto General was ranked the number-three hospital in the world in 2024 and 2025 and improved its standing by one position for the 2026 ranking.

The annual World’s Best Hospitals ranking, compiled by Newsweek and Statista, evaluated over 2,500 hospitals across 30 countries. Scores were based on recommendations from medical experts, hospital quality metrics and patient experience data.

There are almost 216,000 hospitals worldwide, according to Statista, so it’s a proud acheivement for one of Canada’s largest research and teaching hospitals to receive this kind of recognition.

“This moment brings pride and a responsibility to continue advancing what health care can achieve for patients in Canada and globally,” says Dean Connor, Chair of the Board of Directors at UHN.

This also marks the eighth consecutive year that UHN has been named the world’s most universally accessible hospital.

Here’s a look at the top 10 hospitals in the world:

Mayo Clinic – Rochester (U.S.)
University Health Network – Toronto General Hospital (Canada)
Cleveland Clinic (U.S.)
Karolinska Universitetssjukhuset (Sweden)
Massachusetts General Hospital (U.S.)
The Johns Hopkins Hospital (U.S.)
Sheba Medical Center (Israel)
Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin (Germany)
Universitätsspital Zürich (Switzerland)
Singapore General Hospital  (Singapore)

Other Toronto-based UHN hospitals were also recognized in the annual rankings, with Toronto Western Hospital and the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre both included in the list of the world’s top 250 hospitals.

In addition to its high placement among the world’s best hospitals, Toronto General made news earlier this month after granting a terminally-ill man’s wish to play the latest Doom video game.Â
