Soccer club head jailed over fan violence at game

The chairman of a third-division Piraeus soccer club has been jailed for six months over fan violence during a match earlier this month, state ERT television said Thursday.

The Ionikos Nikaias chairman was convicted together with two club supporters, and was sent to prison after the Piraeus court rejected their request to be freed pending hearing of their appeal, ERT said.

The court ruling followed their arrest on February 15 at the Ionikos Nikaias soccer ground during violence at a first-division game between two other clubs.

Police said a group of fans entered the grounds and started attacking supporters of one of the two teams, while officers keeping the peace at the event were also verbally and physically assaulted.
