Apple and Netflix have struck an unorthodox deal that will see shared streaming of an upcoming Formula 1 race as well as the eighth season of Netflix docuseries F1: Drive to Survive.

Season 8 of Drive to Survive premieres Friday, and the season will appear on both Apple TV and Netflix. Both platforms will also share live coverage of the Canadian Grand Prix over the weekend of May 22 to 24.

The programming helps both streaming services with key strategic goals. Apple, which acquired exclusive rights to Formula 1 in the U.S. last year, is aiming to build out complementary programming to keep racing fans engaged with Apple TV when races are not being run. Netflix, meanwhile, has added significant sports rights and other live events to its docket, notably NFL, Major League Baseball and the next FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The F1 season kicks off March 5 with the Australian Grand Prix.

Unlike the stand-alone streaming service Apple created with Major League Soccer, the F1 content will be available to all Apple TV subscribers. In addition to the main races, the service will also feature practice, qualifying and sprints.

For Netflix, the success of Drive to Survive became a model of behind-the-scenes, inside-the-locker room series that the company would emulate with a range of other sports. Seven seasons in, it has remained a strong performer, racking up 10.4 million views in the first half of 2025.

Seeing how sticky the show was also helped motivate the streaming giant to bid on rights to F1 in 2022, early in its public acknowledgement of wanting to offer live sports. Longtime rights holder ESPN retained them in that round.
