THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University men’s tennis team took on a pair of in-state foes this week and came away with a 5-2 win at Southern on Tuesday before falling 4-0 to No. 7 LSU on Thursday in Youngsville.
With the split, the Colonels are 4-2 on the season.
Against Southern, Marcell Marki/Colin Tavares got things started with a 6-1 victory at No. 1 doubles, then Charlie DuBos/Felipe Spagnuolo clinched the point with a 6-4 win at No. 2.
In singles, Arthur Oliani did not give up a game in his shutout win at No. 3, but Southern captured a victory at No. 6. Spagnuolo put Nicholls up 3-1 with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 2.
The Jaguars secured the next point with a triumph at No. 4, but Mitchell Spence followed with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 5 to secure the team victory. Tavares wrapped up the match with a straight-set win at No. 1.
For Thursday’s match against the nationally-ranked Tigers, LSU took the top two courts despite a valiant effort at No. 1 by Marki and Tavares who fell 6-4.
LSU then cruised in singles play with straight-set wins on courts 3, 1 and 6.

The Colonels will host the College of Charleston on Monday, March 2 at the Thibodaux Regional Sports Complex. First ball is scheduled for 1 p.m.
