B.C. championship semifinals for 2 Surrey school hoops teams today at LEC

Two Surrey school teams have played their way to semifinals today (Friday) at the B.C. senior girls basketball championships at Langley Events Centre.

The #3-ranked Holy Cross Crusaders are in a 2A division battle with #13 Westsyde Whundas of Kamloops at 5:15 p.m. on Centre Court, and Semiahmoo Thunderbirds play Argyle Pipers at 6:45 p.m. in 4A Final Four action on the South Court. See full schedule below.

Four separate 16-team tournaments are happening at the sports venue on 200 Street, from 1A to the biggest schools of 4A. Championship finals in all four divisions are played Saturday, Feb. 28.

In 2A, Holy Cross crushed Collingwood Cavaliers 92-35 on Thursday. Solene Jackson scored 28 points, including 25 in the first half. Meantime, Surrey’s Pacific Academy Breakers fell 53-49 to St. Thomas More Collegiate Knights; Abbey Boehm paced the Breakers with 12 points.

In 4A, Thursday saw a Surrey showdown won by semifinals-bound Semiahmoo, 72-55 winners over Johnston Heights Eagles. Jaida Claypool led the way for the Thunderbirds with a 36-point performance, while Puneet Deol scored 29 for the Eagles before fouling out in the fourth quarter.

Heading in, six Surrey teams had a shot at a B.C. championship in two of the four divisions, based on school size.
