Logan Paul is headed to the Elimination Chamber. The men’s match experienced turbulence after Jey Uso was mysteriously attacked backstage. Paul earned a late entry into the match after beating Jacob Fatu on WWE SmackDown.

Paul needed a lot of help to put down “The Samoan Werewolf” Fatu on Friday. He won’t have nearly as much support when he’s locked inside the Elimination Chamber with five superstars eyeing Drew McIntyre’s undisputed WWE title. If Paul can overcome the odds this weekend, he’ll challenge McIntyre at WrestleMania 42.

SmackDown also featured two title defenses as WWE women’s tag team champions RHIYO and United States champion Carmelo Hayes put their titles on the line. In one case, a new champion was crowned.

Paul steals Uso’s spot inside the Elimination Chamber

The men’s Elimination Chamber match experienced a major shakeup moments before SmackDown aired. Uso was found backstage, the victim of a mysterious attack. Superstars came out of the woodwork petitioning for Uso’s spot in the match. The Vision first tracked down SmackDown general manager Nick Aldis, campaigning for Paul. Later, Fatu made his pitch for another shot at contention. Aldis resolved the problem by booking Paul vs. Fatu in a qualifying match.

Elimination Chamber qualifying match — Logan Paul def. Jacob Fatu via pinfall after interference from McIntyre. It took a village, but Paul upset Fatu to earn a spot in the men’s Elimination Chamber match. The Vision’s underhanded tactics weren’t enough to put away Fatu. Paul nearly stole the victory after Paul Heyman distracted the referee. Paul stunned Fatu with a low blow and a titanium punch, but only achieved a two-count. Ultimately, an undisputed WWE title to the face dazed Fatu long enough for Paul to roll him up. During the match, a masked man curb-stomped Austin Theory. Paul knocked out and revealed the assailant, a stranger who was likely a decoy.

Something felt off about SmackDown this week. There wasn’t much mustard on Uso’s surprise exit from the Elimination Chamber. WWE is clearly working towards something between Fatu and McIntyre, but there was a serious appetite to see him in the steel structure. His aura would really thrive in that environment. The match was fine, but the reveal of a decoy masked man fell flat. Grade: C+
