Just months after the Honda Celebration of Light was cancelled for 2026, another high-profile Vancouver summertime event has pulled the plug for this year.
Car Free Vancouver Society announced on Monday, March 2, that it had made the “difficult decision” not to move forward with the 2026 Car Free Days.
According to the society, the choice to cancel the Main Street, Denman and Commercial Drive festivals was made after “careful consideration.”

“We know how much these events mean to the vendors, artists, musicians, local businesses, and community members who show up year after year,” said Car Free Vancouver Society in a post on its website.
“Car Free Day has always been about celebrating neighbourhood culture, creativity, and connection — and it is incredibly hard to pause something that brings so many people together.”
The society revealed several reasons that the landscape for large-scale community events has been challenging.
“Rising operational costs, changes to grant funding and operational support, have moved us into an uncertain place, where the risk of proceeding at this time is too high to mitigate,” it added.

Car Free Vancouver Society also shared that it was going to speak with politicians, aligned organizations, and the community to see what the future of Car Free Days in the city may look like.
“We are truly grateful to everyone who has supported us over the years — our vendors, performers, volunteers, partners, and the hundreds of thousands of attendees who have made these streets come alive,” said the society. “We’re sad to not be with you this year, and will keep you informed as things develop over time.
“Because we’re scrappy, this is not goodbye, but simply see ya later.”
Car Free Day events being removed from the city’s summer schedule comes after it was confirmed in November that the Honda Celebration of Light has been officially cancelled for 2026.

Honda Celebration of Light
In an interview with Daily Hive Urbanized, Paul Runnals, executive producer of the Honda Celebration of Light and a founding partner of event production company Brand Live, says the financial reality has become a “perfect storm” and an “unmanageable situation.” Federal and provincial government contributions — a critical backbone for the free public event ever since the event’s pandemic restart in 2022 — have plummeted.
However, a one-night Vancouver fireworks event was approved in February to replace the Honda Celebration of Light this summer.
