It was always one that came at a price. GM Stan Bowman’s first year has been one of playing catch-up for those lost picks and prospects, and he has done a good job, adding youthful assets such as Vasily Podkolzin and Ike Howard.
But as the year continues, pressure to succeed can lead to higher numbers of deals. If Edmonton goes into “go-for-it” mode once more, which players will be trade bait?
Trades Could Redefine the Oilers’ Path to Another Stanley Cup Final
Stuart Skinner: For a $2.6M value contract, Stuart Skinner has started 50 playoff games and played the opening two Stanley Cup Final games. His internal and league value is enormous.
Matt Savoie: The skilled winger would like to find a chance to play in Edmonton’s top six, but that opportunity hasn’t presented itself yet despite registering strong performances with the Bakersfield Condors.
Vasily Podkolzin: He developed good chemistry with Leon Draisaitl and played well in a five-on-five role. He could be an asset if they bundle him up in a bigger trade.
Beau Akey: The physical, skilled-passing blue liner that he is, signing in the pro system as an Oiler could be tough as their blueline gets crowded.
Maxim Berezkin: A power forward who played very well in KHL, Edmonton has not signed him yet, but his worth will be employed as bait in a trade.
Stan Bowman added depth to the team since he took over the job. Whether any of these players mentioned get moved will be based on how the Oilers’ season goes and how close they appear to finally winning it all.
