SURREY, N.D. (KMOT) – The Surrey Public School board voted on Monday to offer the permanent superintendent position to Steven Bucks.
Surrey Elementary Principal Tarra Hysjulien confirmed the news with Your News Leader.
Bucks is currently the superintendent of Malta Public Schools in Malta, Montana.
The Malta school district coincidentally has the same Mustang mascot—and logo—as Surrey.
The district website indicates Bucks worked in education in McKinney, Texas, and Lemmon, S.D., before going to Malta for the 2023-24 school year.
In July 2025, the board voted to buy out the contract of then-superintendent David Gerding. Luke Schaefer has served as interim superintendent through the Central Regional Education Association (CREA).
The Surrey school board will now hold negotiations with Bucks on an offer.
