Portion of Montreal-area bridge collapses

A bridge on Montreal’s South Shore was completely shut down for a few hours on Wednesday after part of it collapsed.

Eric Allard, the mayor of Châteauguay, Que., where the bridge is located, said no one was injured.

The mayor shared photos of a gaping hole in the middle of one of the lanes and exposed rebar.

“I would like to remind you that this infrastructure is the responsibility of the ministry and is subject to regular inspections,” Allard said in a post on social media.

“That said, I sincerely hope that today’s event will accelerate the steps already underway at the ministry so that the bridge can be completely rebuilt as quickly as possible. Our community deserves reliable and sustainable infrastructure.”

Early Wednesday evening, the Ministry of Transport, which is responsible for the bridge, said the westbound lane will remain closed indefinitely.

Meanwhile, the city has opened one lane in each direction in the eastbound lane after officials deemed it was safe for traffic.

Transport Quebec said inspectors are on site to assess the structure and that emergency repairs will begin Wednesday night.

“This closure will remain in effect until the slab repair work is completed. The ministry’s goal is to reopen the structure safely as quickly as possible,” a ministry spokesperson said in an email.

The concrete beam bridge, built in 1963, was last inspected on Sept. 5, 2024. A follow-up inspection was scheduled for later this year.

The spokesperson added that the ministry is preparing to rebuild the two structures of the bridge on Saint-Bernard Road over the river. The work is still in its early stages and is not expected to begin until 2028.

An average of about 6,000 vehicles drive on the bridge each year, 5 per cent of which include large trucks.
