Winnipeg police are reminding drivers to slow down as roads remain slippery in parts of the city Friday afternoon following overnight freezing drizzle.

Late in the morning, emergency crews responded to multiple collisions across Winnipeg as streets became polished with ice.

Several of the crashes were reported along Portage Avenue, where two multi-vehicle collisions occurred within a short stretch. A crash at Portage Avenue and Arlington Street affected westbound traffic, while another at Portage and Dominion Street impacted traffic in both directions.

Other collisions were reported northbound on Route 90 at Portage Avenue, eastbound Regent Avenue West at Lagimodiere Boulevard, and at Gateway Road and Springfield Road. Several lanes were blocked in multiple directions, and some traffic signals were reported to be out.

In a social media post shortly after 12:30 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service warned that conditions could remain difficult heading into the afternoon.

“Following the recent freezing rain, Winnipeg roads remain slippery in areas,” police wrote.

“#JustSlowDown and leave extra space between you and the vehicles around you.”

Police added that several collisions had already been reported throughout the day and that conditions could remain challenging for the evening commute.

Drivers are being encouraged to allow extra travel time, increase following distance, and drive cautiously as icy patches remain on city streets.
