The 2026 Arnold Classic may have already produced its biggest surprise before the competition officially begins.

Update: Mike Sommerfeld has announced that he missed weight for the 2026 Arnold Classic. He has now set his sights on the 2026 Arnold Classic UK, scheduled for March 27-29 in Birmingham, United Kingdom. Find his full statement below:

“Heading into the show, the weight didn’t come down enough to meet the Classic Physique limit. I take full responsibility for that. Moments like this don’t define you — they humble you. We reset, we adjust, and we move forward.

I want to sincerely thank the IFBB pro league and the organizers for their kindness and professionalism throughout this process. I also want to thank my coach Neil hill who has always looked out for my best interests and is an incredible mentor to me. Wishing all the athletes on stage today the best of luck and great Moments to remember. The focus now shifts forward. See you at the Arnold Classic UK,” Sommerfeld shared

According to people who attended the athlete check in in Columbus, Ohio, Mike Sommerfeld reportedly did not make the required weight for the Classic Physique category, which has now prevented him from mounting a title defense.

Reports Point to Height and Weight Confusion

Classic Physique competitors must follow strict rules connected to their height measurement. Each athlete has a maximum weight they cannot exceed.

These limits are used to protect the visual style of the division, which focuses on proportion, symmetry, and a classic bodybuilding look instead of extreme body mass.

People who attended the weigh in say Sommerfeld arrived expecting that his height would be measured again. Because of that assumption, he reportedly planned his final competition weight based on a higher limit he believed he would receive after a new measurement.

That new height check apparently did not happen.

Since his earlier recorded height remained the official measurement, the allowed weight for his category stayed lower than he expected. Sources claim Sommerfeld came in about seven pounds above the maximum limit connected to his height.

Big Change for the Classic Physique Lineup

The news quickly spread among fans attending the Arnold Classic weekend.

Sommerfeld entered the 2026 event with strong momentum. In 2025 he captured the Arnold Classic Classic Physique title, which marked the biggest victory of his professional career.

That win raised his profile across the bodybuilding world and placed him among the most recognized athletes in the division.

Many fans expected him to return to Columbus and defend the championship. With Sommerfeld out, this could leave room for other athletes to find success onstage.

Talk of a Possible Alternative

There was also discussion inside the venue about a possible backup option.

Some individuals at the event said Sommerfeld might receive an invitation to compete in the IFBB Pro League Men’s Open category. This division does not have height related weight limits and usually features much larger athletes focused on maximum muscle size.

However, reports about this possibility are inconsistent, and no official confirmation has been given.

Even if such an opportunity appeared, competing in Men’s Open would present a very different challenge compared with Classic Physique.

Sommerfeld has built a strong reputation in recent years on the IFBB Pro League stage.

The German athlete is known for a balanced frame that matches the goals of the Classic Physique category. Wide shoulders, a narrow waist, and clean muscle detail have helped him stand out against top competitors.

Before his Arnold Classic victory in 2025, he already recorded several strong results at major professional shows. His ability to arrive in sharp condition during competitions made him a consistent contender.

Winning the Arnold Classic placed his name among the top athletes in the division and increased his popularity with bodybuilding fans.

Fans will have to wait a few more weeks to see Mike Sommerfeld back onstage. Looking ahead, anticipation continues to grow for the 2026 Arnold Classic UK.
