Speaking on the X&O’s Chat podcast, the MVP explained how self-criticism and fear push him to perform at the highest level.
“Mike Tyson, when he was entering the ring, was afraid of his opponent. As he was walking in. Once he got in the ring, it was different,” Jokic said.
“Why should I think differently? If Mike Tyson was afraid of his opponent before the fight, and he’s a lot tougher than me… I know it’s a different sport. But like I said, I have that same fear or self-criticism when things start. When it’s over, sure, I analyze, but during the game, I feel very comfortable. I’m in my element.”

Jokic admitted that this fear fuels his performance, pushing him to expect more from himself.
“I think that’s what drives me. It pushes me because you know you can do better. I expect more from myself. It’s a fear of failure,” Jokic explained.
Even after thousands of games in his career, Jokic still experiences pre-game nerves.
“I can’t say I have no fear. I do. I wouldn’t call it a fear of ‘failing’ exactly, because I’ve lost plenty of big games and I’ve won plenty of big games. But the feeling is always there. I’m not afraid of missing a shot, but you always have that tension.”
“I’ve played, I’m not ashamed to say, maybe 800 or 1,000 games in my life, and even today when I step on the court, I have butterflies,” the center added. “I think any player who doesn’t feel that should change sports. That’s my opinion. If you don’t have that feeling of being on edge.”
