The average price for a one-bedroom rental climbed to just under $2,000 in Brampton last month while the price for purpose-built rentals were some of the lowest in Canada, according to a new report.

The latest National Rent Report from Rentals.ca and Urban Nation shows a 4 per cent month-over-month increase to the average one-bedroom rental price to $1,986.

The average rent for two-bedroom units in Brampton also jumped 4.2 per cent from January to $2,302. Brampton ranked at No. 15 on the report’s list of the 20 most expensive rental cities in Canada.

The most expensive rental market in Ontario other than Toronto was Pickering, with an average rental price of $2,633.

While prices were up from January, they were down 4.4 per cent compared to February 2025 for both one-bedroom units (down 4.4 per cent year-over-year) and two-bedroom apartments (down 2.8 per cent year-over-year.

Nationwide, average asking rent in Canada fell to $2,030 in February, down 2.8 per cent year-over-year to a 33-month low, according to the report.

Alberta saw the largest rent drop of 4.4 per cent to $1,656, followed by Ontario with a decline of 4.3% to $2,229.

Rental affordability “improved significantly” across Canada, with the rent-to-income ratio falling to 29 per cent – the lowest level in over six years and below the industry benchmark of 30 per cent.

But Brampton ranked low on the list of Canadian cities with the most expensive price of purpose-built rentals and condo apartments, with an average price of $2,228. Brampton came in at No. 22 out of 25 on the list, with only Waterloo ($2,188) and Barrie ($2,166) ranking lower in Ontario.

Brampton’s Housing Strategy and Action Plan approved by city council in 2021 and identified purpose-built rentals as one of four areas of focus, with an incentive framework to include purpose-built rental housing.
