The Mission RCMP says that a senior care home in Mission is on fire.
Images from the scene show that the Chartwell Carrington House near 7th Avenue and Cedar Valley Connector was engulfed in flames on Monday afternoon.
1130 NewsRadio was able to talk to an employee at Chartwell Carrington House, who said that the building is being evacuated.
The City of Mission said in a written statement that a Reception Centre has been established at the nearby Mission Leisure Centre.
“Staff from the retirement residence are still in the process of trying to confirm whether everyone was safely evacuated,” Mission RCMP said in a statement.
“Family members coming to meet loved ones should attend the Leisure Centre, not the retirement residence,” police added.
In an email to 1130 NewsRadio, the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA) says that additional support crews are at the scene.
“Ground and air resources have been dispatched,” PHSA spokesperson Diana Stepczuk said.
City staff and police are asking the public to avoid the area as 7th Avenue is closed in both directions between Cedar Street and Briskham Street while crews are on scene.
Photos on social media show what appears to be flames coming from the roof of the building.
