A Michelin-recommended Vancouver steakhouse is opening its first Toronto location next month, and it already promises to be a major hit.

Though Toronto is already home to a fairly impressive roster of steakhouses, from old-school staples like Barberians to celebrity magnets like Jacobs & Co. and Animl, if you ask me, there’s always room for one more.

This April, the city is getting one more, and it’s one that’s almost guaranteed to satisfy.

After months of eager anticipation, Vancouver’s Riley’s Fish & Steak is finally slated to open the doors of its first Toronto location this April. Considering the news of the steakhouse’s new location first dropped nearly a year ago, one more month of waiting feels like small potatoes now.

The Michelin-recommended steakhouse settles into new digs at the RBC Centre, taking over the space that formerly housed The Shore Club, breathing new life into the unit’s cavernous square footage.

Designed to evoke the feeling of escape, the space is comfortable and airy, with vaulted ceilings and archways, while amber tones and alcove seating give the experience a more intimate feel. It’s all about moving the classic steakhouse into the 21st century: a move that designer Ken Lam makes deftly.

The food is in similarly capable hands, with a kitchen helmed by Executive Chef Scott Saunderson, a veteran at Glowbal Hospitality Group with Toronto credits that include BlueBlood Steakhouse and Sofia, on top of lauded institutions in the U.K.

With an emphasis on Canadian ingredients, theatrical presentation and live music, Riley’s will bridge the gap between the new class of youthful, downtown steakhouses and their white-tablecloth forebearers. It’ll at once maintain an air of sophistication and playfulness.

Among the standout experiences you can expect at Riley’s are a selection of dishes that are prepared tableside, like hand-carved prime rib or whole sea bass baked in a salt crust that’s cracked right before your eyes.

The steak selection is made up of hand-selected Canadian prime cuts from Ontario and Nova Scotia, while the expansive kitchen at the Toronto location also lends itself to an expanded seafood menu, including an exclusive hot seafood tower.

“Riley’s is about celebrating great ingredients and classic cooking in a way that feels exciting and social,” says Chef Saunderson. “With the expanded kitchen in Toronto, we’re able to push the menu further — from tableside preparations to standout seafood and prime Canadian steaks — while staying true to what makes a great chophouse.”

Riley’s Toronto is further set apart from its West Coast sibling by its devoted live music program, with a custom-built stage hosting scores of local talent nightly.

Riley’s Fish & Steak Toronto officially opens to the public on April 9, but reservations are available through the restaurant’s website starting April 1. Riley’s Fish & Steak will be located at 155 Wellington St. W.
