The Brampton Comic Con is back this weekend, giving local fanatics a chance to share their love of science-fiction, fantasy, super heroes, Pokemon and much more.
Now in its second year, the Brampton Comic Con is back this weekend. The convention is part of touring events put on by POP Culture Canada, focusing on smaller towns and cities around the Greater Toronto Area.
The idea started 20 years ago, with the motto of “everyone deserves to have a comic con experience,” artist and comic convention vendor Lue Nuwame told INsauga.com.
“Of course it’s not as big and over extravagant as the ones in Toronto, but that’s the whole point,” Nuwame said.
While big ticket events like the Toronto Fan Expo can be a bit overwhelming for some guests, the Brampton Comic Con will offer a “small, intimate comic con” with fun for the whole family.
“You get a taste of everything for the fandom,” Nuwame says.
Cosplay and costumes are encouraged, and Nuwame says the event is a chance for guests to “nerd out” and “be yourself.”
The Brampton Comic Con will feature around 40 vendors selling a wide variety of nerdy paraphernalia, like new and vintage comic books, including big names like Marvel and DC, and smaller Canadian creators and independent publishers.
There will also be vendors selling action figures, cosplay supplies, Pokemon cards and collectibles, Lego sets, stickers, magnets, and art – like Nuwame’s 3D cardboard creations.

Some comic cons also feature guest stars, and guests at the Brampton event will include Canadian actor and director Alyson Court. Best known as Loonette the Clown on The Big Comfy Couch, Court has also voiced roles on X-Men ’97, Beetlejuice, and the Resident Evil video games.
Puppeteer Fred Stinson, also of The Big Comfy Couch fame, will be at the Brampton Comic Con along with Catherine Disher, who was also a voice actor for X-Men ’97 and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis.
Nuwame said “the whole joy of pop culture Canada shows is it’s not overly crowded,” and expects at least 300 fans to attend the Brampton Comic Con this weekend.
Organizers are also accepting donations of canned food and dry goods, which will be given to local food banks.
The Brampton Comic Con runs on May 14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Bramalea Lions Hall, located at 45 Avondale Blvd. Tickets are $10 at the door and $5 in advance, with free entry for children under 12.
There are also VIP passes available for $25, and come with a shopping bag, a Funko pop, a pen, stickers, a pin, a lanyard and other collectible items.
