Surrey’s fifth Car-Free Day event will return to streets of Newton on Saturday, June 6.

Vendors are sought for the 2026 community festival, held noon to 8 p.m. on 137 Street between 72A and 74 avenues.

The street in Newton Town Centre will become a pedestrians-only venue with multiple stages, artisan vendors, local merchants and family-friendly fun, rain or shine.

Admission is free at the one-day festival, which celebrates businesses with storefronts on 137 Street with extended patios and booths, in addition to multiple activities for people, in a TransLink-backed effort to promote a car-free way of life.

“This exciting event brings together residents, businesses and organizations for a day of celebration and community spirit,” says a post on the website of Newton Business Improvement Association (newtonbia.com).

On carfree.ca/become-a-vendor, applications are open in several categories including performers, Newton BIA members, artisan vendors, commercial vendors, non-profits and brand activations.

“Whether you’re a local business looking to connect with the community or a food vendor eager to share your delicious creations, Car Free Day Surrey is the perfect opportunity to get involved and make a positive impact.”

Last June, sunny weather made for a warm Car Free Day Surrey, among several such events in Metro Vancouver presented by TransLink, local municipalities and business improvement associations, including the one in Newton. People were entertained by a Family Zone, climbing wall, face painting, a stage for acoustic music by Glisha and Pat Chessell, dance battles, DJs, food trucks and more.

“We’re so excited to welcome people to experience our neighbourhood on foot this summer, and to help connect everyone to Newton without relying on cars,” Philip Aguirre, executive director of Newton Business Improvement Association, said before the 2025 event.

“Events like this bring our community together, support local businesses, and show what’s possible when we prioritize people, connection, and livable streets.”

Car Free Day festivals aim to highlight how small changes, like walking, biking, or taking transit, can have a big impact.

“This summer, I encourage everyone to get out, explore their neighbourhoods, and enjoy these events by taking transit, walking, or cycling,” says Kevin Quinn, TransLink CEO.
