A Maple Ridge teen has been invited to sing three songs at an upcoming Vancouver Canucks game.

Gigi Wall, a Grade 9 student at Thomas Haney Secondary, will be singing in front of almost 20,000 people at the Thursday, March 19, game at Rogers Arena.

“I’m really excited because this is going to be one of the biggest crowds I’ve ever performed in front of,” said the 14-year-old, who has been dreaming of performing before huge crowds since she started taking voice lessons at Showstoppers Academy of Performing Arts, a musical theatre school in Maple Ridge.

Wall started singing when she was four years old – well, singing properly.

“I started singing since I came out of the womb my mother says,” she chuckled.

What Wall loves about singing is being able to show her emotions through song.

Her favourite singers are Aretha Franklin, Jennifer Hudson, Whitney Houston, and Nina Simone – musicians who have inspired the young artist.

Wall began entering competitions only three years ago. Most recently, the teen won the provincial portion of Canada’s Teen Jam – coming first out of 600 entries.

She will be B.C.’s representative in the competition later this year against winners from other provinces across the country and from the winners of America’s Teen Jam – a contest founded by live music producer Mark Higgins, who has produced live shows for Aerosmith, Bryan Adams, Soundgarden, The Tragically Hip, ZZ Top, Slash and more.

Last year, Wall answered an ad put out by the Ridge Meadows Flames for a national anthem singer and she has been singing “O’Canada” at the start of every game since the beginning of the 2025/26 hockey season.

For the Canucks, Wall simply reached out.

She sent in a video of her winning performance for Canada’s Teen Jam, as well as a video of her singing the national anthem, to the head of Canucks Sports and Entertainment.

They got back to her soon after, telling her how talented she is, and they invited Wall to sing for Next Generation night.

However, they booked her two nights earlier, on Thursday, March 19, when she is scheduled to sing three songs of her choosing.

Wall will be singing one song ahead of the game, one song during first intermission, and the last song during second intermission.

She will be performing “Rise Up” by Andra Day, “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” by Jennifer Hudson, and “Hopelessly Devoted to You” written by John Farrar and originally performed by Olivia Newton-John in the musical film “Grease.”

And her parents couldn’t be prouder, noting how rare it is to have this opportunity.

Wall has been singing every day in preparation for the event.

“This is a dream come true,” noted Wall, who one day hopes to be a successful musician and to sing on Broadway.
