Visma-Lease a Bike’s Jonas Vingegaard won a brutal Stage 4 of Paris-Nice in style, you might say. (Or maybe not.)
“Maybe I’m a trendsetter with these long pants,” Vingegaard joked to TNT. “There just wasn’t time to take them off.”
Double layers FTW
Before the race, the Dane had a pair of bib tights ready–he cut out the additional chamois so as not to screw up his saddle height. The plan was eventually that a teammate would come along and help him take them off and give back to the team car. But, alas…the best laid plans and all that.
“It went so fast,” he said to Sporza. “You didn’t even have time to take off your clothes. I think a lot of guys were very cold. I personally wasn’t, because I was wearing a lot of clothes.”

The 195-km stage was a helluva race. Average speeds exceeded 45 km/h despite multiple climbs, and crashes peppered the descents, including a bad one with race leader Juan Ayuso of Lidl-Trek. The Spaniard was forced to quit. Ultimately. Vingegaard got away in a move with four Red Bull – BORA – hansgrohe riders. Ultimately, that was only two.
“Maybe you can call me a trendsetter” 😅

The final climb separated the contenders, and Vingegaard surged past Daniel Martinez, carving out a 41-second lead to take both the stage and the yellow jersey. “It was incredibly hard all day, but Edoardo Affini was with me most of the way,” he said. “The start was hectic, but to finish like this feels amazing.”
Not only did the Dane have bib tights over his jacket, at one point he also had a rain jacket on backwards–looking more like a straitjacket than cycling kit. Still, Vingegaard credited his layers of clothing for keeping him warm, and for preventing him from stripping down mid-race.
It’s called the Race to the Sun as temps are usually lousy at first, and gradually warmer toward Nice. So hopefully Vingegaard’s sartorial choice was a one-off. But if it wasn’t? Maybe you’ll see some new lewks on your spring group rides.
