South Surrey Arena is getting an upgrade this summer.

City of Surrey council members voted unanimously Monday (March 9) to endorse a recommendation to award Cascadia Sport Systems in the amount of $583,683.01 — including applicable taxes — for the replacement and upgrade of the South Surrey Arena boards, including supply and installation.

The arena, located at 2199 148 Avenue, was built in 1991 and boasts an Olympic-sized rink, as well as indoor digital display screens, and seats more than 1,100. It is home to the British Columbia Hockey League’s Surrey Eagles, Semiahmoo Ravens Minor Hockey and the South Surrey Skating Club.

The work to replace the old boards will include full removal of the existing ice arena boards and shielding system as well as the professionally engineered design, supply, labour, fabrication, materials, installation, commissioning, and services required for a complete boards and shield system, according to a corporate report.

To enhance overall player safety, the new boards system will include acrylic shield and a SoftCap rail system that provides a more forgiving surface and maintains a similar viewing experience as traditional glass.

Work will take place from June 29 to August 6, lasting approximately five to six weeks, the report said.

Groups who will be impacted by the work have been accommodated at alternate sites due to ice assignments for summer being already completed, the city’s parks, recreation and culture department noted in the report.

The ice surface will be reinstalled and ready for the Surrey Eagles and Semiahmoo Minor Hockey pre-seasons, beginning on Aug. 17.

During the council meeting, Coun. Linda Annis questioned whether the new rink boards will still allow the arena to do paid advertising.

“Yes, they will. There will still be the consistent opportunity for advertising … that will continue to be available,” a city staff member responded.

The recommendation set the expenditure authorization limit at $599,550.00.

Funding for the new boards is included in the city’s proposed 2026 Five-Year (2026-2030) Financial Plan – capital program.
