Two former elected officials in Edmonton are turning the page on politics with a pair of new careers.

Former mayor Amarjeet Sohi and former councillor Tim Cartmell are starting new roles.

Sohi, also the former federal minister of natural resources, has joined public affairs firms New West as a senior advisor.

“Public service has always been about bringing people together to solve problems,” said Sohi in a news release. “I’m excited to join New West and continue that work by helping organizations understand government, build relationships, and move good ideas forward.”

Sohi was Edmonton’s mayor from 2021 to 2025 after four years in Ottawa.

Meanwhile Cartmell, who left municipal politics after a failed mayoral bid to replace Sohi, is joining the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT).

Cartmell’s new title is associate vice-president of major capital projects.

Cartmell was a two-term city councillor in Edmonton, from 2017 to 2025, before losing to Andrew Knack in the race for mayor last year.
