While Shauna Palmer usually focuses on caring for human teeth, she recently donated to helping senior dogs get the dental treatment they need.
The West Kelowna dentist stepped up after Fletcher’s Keep Senior Dog Foundation raised awareness of the need for help for senior dogs during Pet Dental Month.
“When I do my job properly, people walk around with a permanent grin,” said Palmer. “Dentistry isn’t just about appearance – it’s about overall health and helping people live better lives. That same philosophy applies to our pets, especially the seniors. If we can help relieve pain and restore comfort, we should. I am an avid animal lover; I have my dog here in my office daily as a “support dog” for patients, and I have donated to animal charities for many years.”
Her donation will help cover urgent dental care for dogs like Scooter, a local senior dog whose untreated dental disease was causing significant pain and inflammation.
“Scooter’s owner, already facing struggles, was heartbroken watching him start to eat less and withdraw due to oral discomfort. Like many aging dogs, his dental issues were affecting more than just his mouth – it was impacting his overall health and quality of life,” reads the release by Fletcher’s foundation.
According to Fletcher’s, dental disease in dogs, specifically senior dogs, can lead to infections, heart complications, organ stress and even surrender when treatment becomes unaffordable.
“Senior dogs often suffer silently,” said Anita Dunford, Foundation founder. “Dr. Palmer’s support means important companions like Scooter can receive the care they urgently need – and can stay with the people who love them, pain-free and dignified. That’s the difference community support like this makes.”
The foundation is calling out to the public, asking them to consider supporting even more dogs for their Senior K9 Smiles Campaign for 2026.
“Health and dignity shouldn’t stop at two legs,” Dunford added. “This is about helping more senior dogs like Scooter, continuing to ease hidden pain, and keeping families together.”
