The Vernon Photography Club is open to all ages and all skill levels.
It was a picture perfect event for the Vernon Photography Club.
The club not only took top spot at the prestigious North Shore Photographic Society’s North Shore Challenge, but also the top photograph.
VPC president Ron Long said the competition attracted photographers from 27 clubs across BC and Yukon.
“Vernon came out on top in the club competition,” Long said.
Club member Virginia Sellars won the top image award for a picture of a horse and two small dogs on the beach taken in Oregon.
“I call us the little club that could,” Long said. “We have between 50 and 60 members.”
And you don’t have to be an expert to join. Long said club members use everything from cellphones to high-end equipment to take pictures.
“We have a lot of members who just have a general interest in photography to members who were former professional photographers and are now retired,” said Long.
The club meets virtually and in person on a regular basis and anyone is able to join.
During a Zoom meeting, club members will post photos that are critiqued by the group.
“We critique them rather than rate them,” Long said, adding club members will offer suggestions on how to make a picture even better.
Once a month the club will hold in person meetings that Long said are “educational meetings” featuring a wide range of knowledgable speakers from within the club and guests from other areas.
The club website says the “our mission is to foster a safe and creative social environment where both experienced and beginner photographers can grow their skills and share their passion for capturing moments.
“First and foremost we like to have fun and help each other. Learning together is one of the best ways to expand ourselves as individuals while enjoying the company of like minded friends. We believe that there is never a dumb question when it comes to photography.”
