The Fairmont hotel is slated to close for the better part of a year as the downtown property undergoes renovations its owner says will return the building to its position as “the city’s pre-eminent luxury hotel.”
James Richardson & Sons Ltd. said in a news release Tuesday that the Fairmont Winnipeg will be closing to guests on July 1 for months of renovations, which include a complete remodeling of the 340 guest rooms.
The company said it will also be updating the Velvet Glove restaurant, lobby bar and event spaces, alongside renovations to the indoor pool, gym and Fairmont Gold lounge.
The hotel, which opened near Portage and Main in 1970, was originally developed and owned by the Richardson family. It was sold in 2000 but reacquired more than two decades later, in 2024.
The company said it has been working to modernize the hotel’s plumbing, mechanical and HVAC systems since it bought the site in 2024.
James Richardson & Sons Ltd. president Thor Richardson said in the news release that the company aims to build “a hotel that Winnipeggers will be proud of.”
The Fairmont Winnipeg is expected to reopen in the spring of 2027.
