Homicide investigators on scene in Maple Ridge

A man is dead following a fight in a residential neighbourhood of Maple Ridge on Monday night, March 16.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has been called to an Albion home that was behind police tape on Tuesday morning.

Neighbours reported hearing a scream from the residence in the 23700-block of 110th Avenue.

Ridge Meadows RCMP had a report of a fight in progress, and police, paramedics, and firefighters responded at approximately 7:30 p.m.

When officers arrived at the house they found a male victim, 49, in medical distress. Despite life-saving efforts by officers and attending emergency health services, the man did not survive.

One person was arrested at the scene, and remains in custody as IHIT investigators determine his involvement in the victim’s death.

While the investigation is still in its early stages, investigators believe this is an isolated incident involving parties known to each other. Police do not believe there is any further risk to the public, and say the homicide is not believed to be related to gang activity or extortion.

Officers continued to gather evidence in the area, which meant the scene was cordoned off for some time as the investigation proceeds.

“Due to the swift response by the Ridge Meadows RCMP frontline officers, the scene was quickly made safe and secured for further investigation,” said Sgt. Freda Fong of IHIT. “You can expect investigators in the area as witness interviews and CCTV review are ongoing.”

IHIT continues to work in close partnership with the Ridge Meadows RCMP Serious Crime Unit, the Integrated Forensic Identification Services (IFIS) and the BC Coroners Service to advance the investigation.
