Some late power-play success made things interesting, but it wasn’t enough for the Sudbury Wolves to overcome their earlier struggles with the man advantage, as well as in the crease, in a 6-3 loss to the Brampton Steelheads at the CAA Centre on Tuesday afternoon.

Sudbury’s Jan Chovan in the second period, then teammates Adam Nemec and Artem Gonchar in the third made it a two-goal game after the Wolves surrendered a 5-0 lead to the host Steelheads, but Matej Stankoven put things out of reach with an empty netter.

Brampton’s Ty Daniels and Mason Roy in the first period, and Owen Cartwright and Julian DeMiglio in the second tallied to send Sudbury starter Paolo Frasca to the bench with nine saves on 13 shots. Backup Bjorn Bronas surrendered one more goal to Stankoven, the game’s first star, but the Wolves netminder settled in well and turned aside 11 of 12 to help give his team a fighting chance.
Chovan and Nemec each added assists to their stat lines and Daniel Berehowsky had two helpers of his own to give him 14 points in his last 13 games as the Wolves dropped to 26-38-2-0 with a third straight defeat.
Having already clinched the eighth and final playoff spot in the OHL’s Eastern Conference, with Brampton and Oshawa destined to finish outside the playoff picture, the Wolves will host the Steelheads this coming Friday at 7:05 p.m., then visit the North Bay Battalion on Sunday at 2:05 p.m.
They’ll open the playoffs by the following weekend, with Brantford, Barrie or Ottawa serving as their first-round opponent.
