A pub in the heart of Toronto’s Trinity Bellwoods neighbourhood is being transformed into peak 1920s gangster cool this weekend in celebration of the release of Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, a film that continues the six-season legacy of the legendary Peaky Blinders Birmingham (England) street gang and its charismatic leader, Thomas Shelby.
The movie landed in theatres March 6 for a brief theatrical run before it launches on Netflix Friday, with the immersive pop-up at Man of Kent (202 Ossington) turning the local into a richly detailed English hideaway inspired by the Garrison pub from the television show, complete with show-inspired cocktails and bites, a Peaky portrait studio, temporary tattoo parlour, and hidden ‘easter eggs’ that bring the Shelby legacy to life.
The 19-plus pop-up runs from 6 p.m. until midnight on Friday, and then from noon until 8 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. And while there isn’t a dress code, you can expect to see plenty of flat-top ‘peaked’ caps (hopefully without razor blades sewed in the brim, Peaky ‘Blinders’-style) and a sizable percentage of the city’s tweed supply.
It’s a free event but capacity is limited and entry is on a first come, first served basis.
Peaky Blinders pop-up at Toronto’s Man of Kent pub
Peaky Blinders follows gangster Thomas Shelby, played by Academy Award winner Cillian Murphy, in the aftermath of the First World War. The movie follows an older Tommy, now living in exile in the lead-up to WWII as he faces new enemies and tries to fix the mess his son (played by Oscar-nominated Barry Keoghan) made of the family legacy.
Amidst the chaos of war, Tommy Shelby is driven back from a self-imposed exile to face his own demons and choose whether to confront his legacy or burn it to the ground.
The cast also includes Rebecca Ferguson (Dune, A House of Dynamite), Tim Roth (Reservoir Dogs, The Hateful Eight), Sophie Rundle (After the Flood, Gentleman Jack) with Emmy winner Stephen Graham (Adolescence, Boiling Point).
