Alberta’s police watchdog — the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) — is investigating an officer-involved shooting on March 10.

ASIRT says around 1:30 p.m. on Mar. 10, Mounties responded to a report of a stabbing at a home in St. Paul — around 180 km east of Edmonton.

When officers arrived, they found a woman suffering from injuries consistent with a stabbing and began providing first aid.

While searching the home, officers were reportedly able to find a man in the bedroom who was armed with a knife. Mounties reportedly tried to give the man directions to drop the knife; however, the man reportedly moved towards the officers, at which point one of the officers fired his gun.

Following this, the man reportedly fell, but continued holding the knife and continued not following commands, at which point officers used a conducted energy weapon, disarming the man and taking him into custody.

The man was taken to hospital in Edmonton by paramedics, while the woman was taken to a local hospital by another paramedic crew.

Due to the nature of the incident, ASIRT was informed and has begun an investigation.
