A $1.2-million upgrade being proposed for Mississauga’s main sports and entertainment venue would better position the city “to compete nationally in the sports and events market,” those behind the plan say.
Scheduled to present its 2026 business plan and budget at the City of Mississauga’s general committee meeting next Wednesday, Visit Mississauga is also expected to table a plan to install a removable floor system inside the Paramount Fine Foods Centre Sportsplex.
As the city’s official Destination Marketing Organization since 2020, Visit Mississauga is involved in crafting the city’s tourism strategy, spearheading marketing initiatives and fostering tourism development. It also engages in efforts to boost Mississauga’s economy by attracting sports and corporate events.
One component of the organization’s vision for the coming year is to outfit the Sportsplex, located at Highway 403 and Matheson Boulevard East, with a new floor system that could be switched in and out depending on what events — sports or otherwise — are being hosted.
The estimated cost of such an undertaking is about $1.2 million, according to Visit Mississauga, which adds it has the money needed in its Municipal Accommodation Tax (MAT) reserve funds. The city’s MAT fund collects money via visitors to the city paying a six per cent tax during short-term stays.
In its scheduled presentation to councillors and city staff on March 25, a copy of which is included in the meeting’s online agenda, Visit Mississauga says it sees a “significant opportunity to enhance the versatility and marketability of the Sportsplex by investing in a removable floor system.”
Such a plan would better position Mississauga “to compete nationally in the sports and events market, particularly for multi-day, high-attendance events that generate overnight stays, local spending and community engagement,” the organization continued.
Visit Mississauga said a new floor system would enable the Sportsplex to host a wider variety of events, including:
Regional- and national-level volleyball, basketball, futsal and martial arts competitions.
Cultural festivals and trade shows.
Award shows, opening/closing ceremonies and other community celebrations.
The 200,000-sq.-ft. Paramount Fine Foods Centre Sportsplex opened in September 2007 and includes a full-size FIFA indoor artificial turf field, gymnastics centre, triple gymnasium and fitness centre, among other features.
Outside, two artificial turf fields with a full lighting system are used year-round — domed in the winter months — for football, soccer and other community sports activities, the city says in its description of the venue.
The Sportsplex welcomes almost 100,000 visitors each month, the city said.
