NASHVILLE, Tenn. – In its outdoor home opener on campus at the Beaman Family Tennis Complex Friday morning, the Belmont University women’s tennis team suffered a 4-0 loss to New Mexico State. The Bruins (1-11) were unable to win the all-important doubles point before the visiting Aggies (7-8) clinched the match with straight-set singles victories on courts four through six.

The top doubles tandem of redshirt freshman Savannah Webster and sophomore Jessica Popiol trailed 5-4 when New Mexico State secured the opening point. The Aggies clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 win at the third spot, courtesy of Dora Kurdi and Whitney Moon. New Mexico State’s Anna Klimova and Montana Parkinson-Lubold gave the Aggies their first win of the morning with a 6-3 set at No. 2 doubles against graduate Cielo Tapia-Cruz and junior Emma Grant.

In singles action, New Mexico State conceded no more than four combined games in any match at the No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 positions.

The top three singles matches went unfinished.

At the top of the lineup, Webster led the Aggies’ Moon 3-1 in the second set after dropping the opening set, 6-4. Tapia-Cruz was knotted up at 4-4 in the second set with New Mexico State’s Parkinson-Lubold on court two after falling in the first set, 6-1.

Popiol had a promising 6-4, 3-2 lead on the Aggies’ Emma Petton at No. 3 singles when New Mexico State clinched the match.

Belmont faces one more non-conference test Sunday morning before beginning Missouri Valley Conference play next weekend. The Bruins host Eastern Kentucky at 10 a.m. at the Beaman Family Tennis Complex to close out the weekend.
