THE Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) announced on Friday that the charge against 29-year-old Abo Abdel Kurdali has been upgraded to second-degree murder in relation to the shooting at a residence in Surrey in the early morning hours of March 15.

IHIT deployed to Surrey on March 15 following a fatal shooting at a residence in the 13900-block of Laurel Drive.

There was one victim. One man was arrested and taken into custody.

Working with officers from the Surrey Police Service (SPS), BC Coroners Service and the Integrated Forensic Identification Service (IFIS), IHIT investigators continued to advance the investigation. They believe this was an isolated incident, where the victim and the accused were known to each other.

The BC Prosecution Service approved one count of manslaughter with a firearm on March 15 against Kurdali in relation to this incident.

On March 19, the BC Prosecution Service upgraded the charge against Kurdali to second-degree murder.

He remains in custody and appeared in court on Friday morning.

“The upgrading of the charge in this investigation is a result of continued efforts by the investigative team and our partners,” says Sgt. Freda Fong of IHIT. “We continue to pursue every avenue and examine every detail to provide clarity and answers for the family. We extend our thoughts to the victim’s loved ones.”
