With Saturday’s contest meaning nothing in the Ontario Hockey League standings with Kingston sewing up sixth place with a 4-2 win over Barrie on Wednesday, coach Troy Mann scratched defenceman Maleek McGowan and forwards Tomas Pobezal and Alex Misiak. Black aces Adam Kelly and Niko Krmpotik drew into the line-up, as did Camden McCuaig, who skated for most of the season with the Cornwall Colts.
After playing well in the Frontenacs’ 4-2 loss to Peterborough on Friday night, goaltender Gavin Betts travelled with the team to Ottawa, but didn’t dress to back up Matt Minchak who drew the start in net against the 67’s.
Mann described Betts’s attendance as first-hand scouting. “He just wanted to watch the game and see if he spotted anything in the bounces off the boards,” the coach said.

For their part the 67’s went with their regular line-up. Ottawa coach Dave Cameron could have rested regulars like the Frontenacs did and avoided any risk of injury, but the 67’s lost to the bottom-place Generals 4-3 in Oshawa Friday night, so management might not have been considered such a perk unearned.
Neither team looked particularly interested in the first period, which was not only scoreless, but also as listless and action-free as anything you’d see between two major junior-teams. Kingston didn’t even manage a shot on the Ottawa net until the ten-minute mark.
The game picked up the pace in a more competitive second period, particularly when Frontenacs defenceman Matthew Henderson opened the scoring with a powerplay goal midway through the frame. For Henderson, a first-round pick in last year’s Priority Selection, his second goal of the season was both a belated birthday gift (his 17th birthday falling on Friday) and a glimpse of the future for the Frontenacs’ powerplay for the next two or three seasons.

That, however, was all the good news for the visitors. Ottawa centre Thomas Vandenberg and defenceman David Bedkowski scored on consecutive shifts three minutes later and the game started to get away from the Frontenacs with their scrambled line-up.
The rout was on in the third period with Ottawa pouring in four goals. Cooper Foster, Teddy Spitznagel, Jasper Kuhta and Sam McCue all lit the lamp to fatten their season stats.
Through the onslaught, Kingston netminder Matt Minchak didn’t have much in the way of support, the 67’s being credited with 48 shots, 25 in the last 20 minutes.
“It’s never fun losing but we knew it was a nothing game,” Mann said. “Why they played all their regulars I don’t know. Losing back-to-back games isn’t a great way to end the season, but we played well against Peterborough. We can just put this one behind us.
