John Fury has offered a surprisingly measured take on Jake Paul, a figure who continues to divide opinion in boxing.

Fury is one of boxing’s most recognisable personalities, known as the father of heavyweight champion Tyson Fury and cruiserweight contender Tommy Fury. His outspoken nature has made him a constant presence around major fights.

Paul, meanwhile, remains a controversial figure. Critics question his level of opposition and view his rise as commercially driven.

On the other hand, supporters point to his growing experience and willingness to take risks, and the 60-year-old coach seems to be closer to that view.

Speaking to IFN Boxing, Fury acknowledged Paul’s achievements business-wise, but also recognised his boxing skills after the fight against Anthony Joshua.

“Very clever business young man, making all the right moves. Made plenty of money, got in with AJ, went six rounds when nobody gave him a chance, so you’ve got to give him credit for that,” he began by saying.

“He lost the battle, but won the war. Got a lot of bottle, don’t mind getting in, and AJ hit him with the right hand, didn’t he? And he got up quicker than what Ngannou did, so props to Jake Paul.”

While the debates about his legitimacy in the boxing world continue, ‘The Problem Child’s’ financial results are undeniable. He reportedly earned over $90 million from the Joshua fight.

Tommy Fury was the first man to beat Jake Paul

The Fury family have a direct connection with Paul inside the ring. Tommy Fury faced him in February 2023 in Saudi Arabia.

The bout went the distance, with Tommy securing a split decision victory and handing the YouTuber-turned-boxer his first professional defeat. It was a closely contested fight that drew global attention.

Despite suffering a knockdown, John Fury’s youngest son landed more punches, with the scorecards reading 74–75, 76–73, 76–73.
