Zach Galifianakis of The Hangover fame lives in the Comox Valley and spoke with children and farmers for a new Netflix series premiering next month.

The streaming service Netflix says “Zach Galifianakis digs into the world of gardening, interviewing curious kids and eccentric experts in a funny, oddball celebration of the food we eat” for his new show, This is a Gardening Show.

The new six part series is set to be released on April 22, which is Earth Day.

“The way we get food is so perverse right now; I think it’s worth talking about it,” Galifianakis says in the trailer.

The series was shot in the Comox Valley where Galifianakis lives and includes local spots like Brooklyn Elementary School in Comox and Mount Washington.

The series was also shot at several Comox Valley farms including Amara Farm in north Courtenay, owned by Arzeena Hamir.

“It was silly and goofy and basically he said he wanted to do a documentary on how to grow food – but his questions were so funny, we were laughing, I was laughing the whole time,” Hamir told CHEK News Tuesday.

Hamir is only seen for a split second but her farm was used for many of the segments, and she has received calls from people she knows across the country who have seen it.

“So I think it’s going to be very lovely, a showcase of our community and the food that’s grown here, and some of the things like salad bars in schools, that we have some really unique things happening here in the Comox Valley,” she added.

Galifianakis cemented his name as a Hollywood funnyman playing Alan Garner in the Hangover film trilogy that came out in 2009, 2011 and 2013.

“Like I said, laughing the whole time. He ended up buying some plants from us and took out a wad of fives and I said, ‘Oh,’ and he said, ‘Oh yeah, from the stripping,’” Hamir added with a laugh.

The Vancouver Island North Film Commission (INFILM) pre-scouted locations before the production began four years ago.

“I remember at the time it was fun to talk about it between us, because we thought, ‘Oh Zach’s sense of humour is going to be cute to watch,’ and sure enough looking at the trailers, you know, definitely his personality comes through,” said INFILM executive director Joan Miller.

She says producers are usually tight-lipped about the projects they are working on when they approach INFILM.

“This one was particularly quiet and they were guarded with the filming, so yeah. Hey, four years later Netflix is coming out, I’m looking forward to it,” Miller added.
