After a one year hiatus, a cricket tournament previously held in Brampton with global viewership that rivals the Super Bowl is coming back to the Toronto area.
And this year’s event will also feature new teams, including two new outfits for Mississauga and Brampton
The fifth edition of the GT20 Canada tournament is set to run from July 23 to Aug. 8 this summer – a cricket tournament that in past years has brought the sport’s biggest stars from around the world to the CAA Centre sports park in Brampton.
The tournament announced this week that two new teams, the Blazers and Skyhawks, will rep Brampton and Mississauga respectively in this year’s outing.
Previous teams included in the six-team tournament the Brampton Wolves, the Montreal Tigers, the Bangla Tigers Mississauga, Vancouver Knights, Surrey Jaguars and Toronto Nationals.
The tournament was paused in 2025, and organizers haven’t said where the games will be held this year, other than that the GT20 will be held in the Toronto area. A request for comment from organizers was not returned by publication.
This year’s GT20 is being organized by NCL Canada, “with a clear focus on building a strong cricketing culture in Canada.”

“GT20 aims to offer fans a mix of local heroes and international stars. The tournament will feature top-level matches, competitive spirit, and non-stop excitement for fans of all ages,” the tournament’s website reads.
The last GT20 tournament in 2023 was broadcast in 133 countries with an audience of over 180 million – more than the Super Bowl’s 115.1 million watchers that year. Organizers say the tournament brought more than $30 million in value for the city in 2023, $34 million for the province, and $43 million for Canada.
Brampton has invested millions into its goal of becoming the “cricket capital of Canada” with the opening of the city’s first Tape Ball court, a GT20 Cricket Youth League and plans for the city’s first all-season covered cricket dome.
